The Inanda Chapel

Religious Activities and Involvement

Having been founded by Christian missionaries over 155 years ago, faith continues to be a fundamental part of Inanda Seminary. The school’s ethos is guided by Christian principles and can be seen in our Core Values, which are honesty, loyalty, respect, self-discipline, sociability and responsibility. These values are an integral part of our mission to raise well-balanced, upright young women with strong moral convictions and leadership qualities.

The Chapel is often referred to as the heart of our school. It is there that we gather most mornings to begin the day in prayer, worship and listening to a message around a Scripture reading. The broad spectrum of music that is played reflects the diverse backgrounds that our students come from, with music genres from gospel, choruses, Hillsong/modern international, as well as traditional isiZulu hymns being sung. These times during the week and on a Sunday morning help to ensure that we are united as a school and living lives marked by love and compassion.

All Inanda girls are expected to participate positively in Christian religious activities of the school without necessarily compromising their own beliefs if they belong to other faiths. This means that all students are expected to respectfully attend weekly and Sunday chapel but are not forced to worship – the school songs are the only songs that students are mandated to sing.

Student Christian Fellowship (SCF) is a voluntary student-led gathering, where our students across the grades gather weekly to share, to encourage each other and to grow in their relationship with God.

Chapel Themes

Our morning chapel services are conducted in a warm, relevant and relatable manner, which follow a termly theme. These themes cover a broad spectrum of topics which help our students to better understand God, and the world around us.

Some examples of recent themes are:

-        ‘Childlike, Christlike’ where we have looked at the different teachings of God which can be gleaned while reading children’s storybooks.

-        ‘Audacious Women’ was a study of many of the women mentioned in the Bible, looking at their contributions and the examples they set.

-        ‘Created meets Creator’ explored how we can see the Characteristics of God revealed in the natural world around us.

-        Go Eat Popcorn’ where we focused on the New Testament epistles of Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians.
