Thula Ngcobo

Dr Thula Ngcobo is a Specialist Surgeon with a special interest in Breast Surgery. She is the head of a clinical unit in the Department of Surgery at 1Military Hospital and is in charge of the Breast Clinic. She is a lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pretoria, where she teaches surgery to medical students and trains and supervises doctors who are training to be surgeons. She also does private work at Medforum Mediclinic.

Thula qualified as the first African Woman Surgeon in South Africa in 1998. She was admitted as a fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa in 1999. Among the things that she attributes to her success is the moulding at Inanda Seminary.

Just seeing girls at Inanda do everything confidently and so well from academics, to debating, gum boot dancing, sports etc quickly dispels the myth that women are in any way inferior to men and you come to the realization that there is nothing that a man can do that a woman cannot do, except maybe certain activities requiring physical strength. This enables a woman to fearlessly penetrate male-dominated fields successfully and not feel intimidated.

The attached profile article was published in the Tribute magazine after she was admitted as the first African woman to the College of Surgeons of South Africa.
